Herbs

Well I can only briefly touch on this subject. If I was to go into this I could create a whole web site just on this!

This is what mother nature intended for us to use as medicine. Most of todays medicines are derived from plants. There are over 50 known anti-cancer treatments made from plants in the rainforests! (Even more of a reason to save them!)

Herbs, like traditonal medicines, do have side effects. Maybe not the same, or not as bad, but they do.

Many people blindly jump into herbs thinking that if it is natural, that it will not hurt them. This is a MAJOR mistake. I would suggest talking to a licenced doctor that is herb-friendly, or go to a natural practitioner. Contact your local health food store or check your newspaper.

I do recommend a few herbs for medicinal uses:

Echinacea:

Sometimes known as Purple Coneflower. It is native to North America. It can be used for so many things, for example:

Garlic (ok...not an herb...but still):

Garlic is closely related to onions. It has been traced medicinally back to the year 510 A.D. . Louie Pasteur first confirmed the antibacterial properties in 1858. This amazing plant has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal prpoerties. It has been linked to the reduction of esophageal, stomach, and colon cancer. I helps those with cardiovascular disease, by keeping blood clotting in check. Along with all of this is also can help the following:

Goldenseal:

This is most often combined with echinacea for the treatment of colds and other respiratory problems. It is a powerful antioxidant, and should be used only in moderation and as instructed. This can cause liver damage if taken in excess. It has also been known to treat:

Honey (again...not an herb..):

Honey and Garlic are almost identical in the benifits that they produce. If you have a cut..put honey on it. Not only will it help disinfect the cut, but will draw out any matter that may be in it. As you would with any cut, keep clean and watch for signs of infection. Even the over the counter antibiotics don't always work.

Check your local bookstore, health food store, or school for more materials on herbs. Do remember that some material may be out of date, and that not all herbs listed may be safe. It is still better to check with a professional before consumption.
